Fortunate Son. The Darrell Gwynn Story
NHRA Hall of Famer and South Florida racing icon Darrell Gwynn is preparing to release Fortunate Son: The Darrell Gwynn Story, a photo book that traces his life and career through the lenses of the photographers who documented it—at the track, at home, and in the chapters that followed his life-changing crash.
Gwynn, age 64, describes Fortunate Son as a visual memoir—an image-first companion to his written story. The project follows his 2003 autobiography, Full Throttle, penned with respected motorsports journalist Erik Arneson, and expands the narrative with decades of photography gathered from friends, fans, professionals, and publications.

“The inspiration for this book came somewhat as a pleasant surprise,” Gwynn said. “I was stunned by the sheer volume of pictures that I acquired over the years, and it motivated me to organize it to put the moments in chronological order and tell a part of my story in pictures.”
The book features images from dozens of amateur and professional photographers, spanning racing, media, business, and community events. Organized chronologically, Fortunate Son captures Gwynn’s rise through NHRA competition, championship seasons, behind-the-scenes life, and the relationships that shaped his journey.
A central chapter revisits the pivotal moment of Gwynn’s career: after winning the NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster world championship in 1983, his pursuit of the sport’s premier Top Fuel title was halted by a near-fatal testing crash in England on Easter weekend 1990. The roughly 250-mph impact resulted in the loss of an arm and paralysis, yet he returned to the sport as a successful team owner and became a tireless advocate for spinal cord injury research and support.
Gwynn’s advocacy includes his long-standing work through the Darrell Gwynn Chapter of The Buoniconti Fund and the internationally renowned Miami Project to Cure Paralysis at the University of Miami. Through this work, he helps raise awareness and resources for research, rehabilitation, and community support for people living with spinal cord injuries.

About Darrell Gwynn — Darrell Gwynn is a member of the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America and the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame. The South Florida-based motorsports champion and longtime leader in drag racing won the NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster world championship in 1983 and later became a respected team owner and ambassador for the sport. Following a life-changing crash in 1990, Gwynn has continued to champion spinal cord injury research and support initiatives through the Darrell Gwynn Foundation and, more recently, the Darrell Gwynn Chapter of The Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis.
